The Youth Track Cycling (YTC) program was started in 2008 to introduce the youth to track cycling. By the end of the program, participants will be able to ride and race on the cycling
track in a safe and predictable manner. The program covers typical track riding skills including, but not limited to:
- riding a fixed gear track bike
- riding at the top of the track
- riding on the track with others
- riding in a group
- riding in a “paceline”
- the basics of racing on the track
Sheldon Bole is the program co-ordinator and can be contacted on 082 900 8824 or at gnctrack@gmail.com. Sheldon will be assisted by other cyclists who have previously completed the program and who have demonstrated a good understanding of the principals taught. These riders have a unique perspective due to their participation in the program; they will form a mentoring relationship with the program participants.
Advancement beyond the program
Track racing is held at Pilditch on Wednesday evenings from seven o’clock and should be finished by nine o’clock. The participants are encouraged to come and watch to see what this is all about. YTC participants will be invited to join racing as soon as they have demonstrated an acceptable level of riding skills; this may be done on a rider by rider basis.
Prerequisits
YTC was formulated to introduce the youth to the thrills of track cycling, as such the only prerequisites for participation are the ability to ride a bike and being between the ages of 9 and 18.Registration is required for the YTC.
Requirements for Accreditation
Participants must attend all four days of the YTC to be accredited with completion of the course. The principals being taught are very important for the safety of all the cyclists on the track and missing something important might lead to problems down the line. Participant's abilities and skills will be evaluated by the program leaders. If a participant cannot demonstrate sufficient skills or is not able to attend all four sessions, they will be invited to join the next YTC program.YTC Schedule
YTC comprises four sessions held over two weekends from twelve till three o'clock and an introduction race day. The YTC sessions finish at
three o’clock to allow the program leaders extra
time with participants who have questions or who did not fully grasp
the day’s session. So participants might only be finished by four
o’clock. The introduction race day will be part of the track's normal Wednesday evening racing.
